Calculation of biodiversity level between different land-uses to improve conservation outcomes of biodiversity offsetting

چکیده

The goal of the mitigation hierarchy is to counteract losses biodiversity due development projects by avoiding, reducing and as a last resort, offsetting these losses. However, implementation offset measures currently very unsatisfactory from perspective, many do not incorporate them. Here, we proposed method for comparing level between different land-uses propose set alternative offering same outcomes. Biodiversity (including both bird bat communities) was calculated variation in each (fallow, grass strip, bush, strip with bushes, hedgerow) compared crops (control). In order account local specificities environmental assessment studies, modulated calculation following three examples scenarios that differed according weights assigned species. For scenario, hedgerow always land-use generated greatest level, found be best terms effect size. advantage this its weighting system opinions stakeholders species, such their sensibility project or conservation status, can taken into account, resulting results being better appropriated. Thus, could implemented more efficiently thanks multi-taxonomic calculations weighing possibilities, improving This also used compare residual loss gains measures, using metric.

Biodiversity data obsolescence and land uses changes

BACKGROUND Primary biodiversity records (PBR) are essential in many areas of scientific research as they document the biodiversity through time and space. However, concerns about PBR quality and fitness-for-use have grown, especially as derived from taxonomical, geographical and sampling effort biases. Nonetheless, the temporal bias stemming from data ageing has received less attention. We exam...

Reframing the land-sparing/land-sharing debate for biodiversity conservation.

Conservation biologists are devoting an increasing amount of energy to debating whether land sparing (high-yielding agriculture on a small land footprint) or land sharing (low-yielding, wildlife-friendly agriculture on a larger land footprint) will promote better outcomes for local and global biodiversity. In turn, concerns are mounting about how to feed the world, given increasing demands for ...

Perverse Market Outcomes from Biodiversity Conservation Interventions

Conservation interventions are being implemented at various spatial scales to reduce the impacts of rising global population and affluence on biodiversity and ecosystems. While the direct impacts of these conservation efforts are considered, the unintended consequences brought about by market feedback effects are often overlooked. Perverse market outcomes could result in reduced or even reverse...

Biodiversity: the interface between systematics and conservation.

The rapid development of interest inbiodiversity has provided unprecedented opportunities for interactions among disciplines. Although systematic biology and conservation biology have developed largely independently of one another, it is clear now from the burgeoning literature that conservation concerns can motivate systematic studies and that better knowledge of the systematics of organisms c...

Wilderness and biodiversity conservation.

Human pressure threatens many species and ecosystems, so conservation efforts necessarily prioritize saving them. However, conservation should clearly be proactive wherever possible. In this article, we assess the biodiversity conservation value, and specifically the irreplaceability in terms of species endemism, of those of the planet's ecosystems that remain intact. We find that 24 wilderness...
